Darren Sharper Takes Plea Deal
The Darren Sharper rape case surprisingly flew under the radar. Sharper was accused of drugging and raping 9 women in 4 different states. The Ray Rice and Greg Hardy cases put the Sharper case in the limelight somewhat, but the NFL escaped the negative publicity.
Sharper was accused of drugging and raping unconscious women. He took a plea deal where he will serve 9 years for all 9 rapes. The various sentences will be served concurrently, so he will only serve 9 years in Federal prison. The deal is a major coup for Sharper because he could have received 2 life sentences for the charges in Nevada alone. Plus he is only serving 50% of his time, where people convicted of rape typically serve 85% of the time.
The sentence isn’t doing the NFL any favors because even though they didn’t have anything to the decision, the perception will be that they did. There is a new climate, and actions will speak louder than words. This case slipped through the cracks, but the NFL better be on guard because if there any other issues this case will come back up.
